my life is one big fat fail.
Reason Number 532: Why I Hate GPs

Here's a lolworthy story for you all. Okay, last year I put on about a stone and a half in weight. Over the course of maybe a month. Which was weird because I a) rarely eat more than 1200 calories a day (I count them like a freak) and b) I'm a veggie who tries to avoid sugary foods etc. But anyway, I chalked it up to laziness and then got hit with glandular fever and thought that had something to do with it too. Since January I've been going to the gym, keeping my diet really strict and... absolutely nothing has happened. I finally started shifting the weight about a month ago but so far I've only lost 6 pounds. Which is great, yes, but still quite a way to go :/ Anyway, on top of this I can get reeeally lethargic some days. Like I'll literally have no energy, it's insane. I was anemic but I take iron now on a daily basis so I can no longer blame it on that. I got a really bad migraine last night (which I still have, lucky me) so I decided to google my prescription medicine to see if I could take it with one of my dad's painkillers.

Pizotifen will now be known as That One Drug You Should Never, Never Take. Because, you see, it is apparently "rarely prescribed" as a first time anti-migraine med because the two common side effects are weight gain and drowsiness. I started taking Pizotifen in May. 2 months later and I'd gained weight and started to feel like shit. This was my reaction after reading the info on the net :O Next, I decided to google and see if many people got these side effects because usually side effects aren't that common. Ohohoho. What I found were numerous tales of how people had gained over a stone in 3-4 weeks after starting Pizotifen and felt really tired, occasionally depressed, extremely hungry and etc. All of these things that I had thought were my fault. I should also point out that Pizotifen was the first tablet that my doctor put me on. He also neglected to point out these lovely side effects to me. Why? I don't know. Maybe he wanted me to get fat and miserable.

On one hand, I'm relieved. Because working out and eating strictly for 6 months and seeing very little progress is soul destroying. I kid you not. So to learn that hey, something has been working against me all this time is comforting. On the other hand, I'm bloody FURIOUS. Fingers crossed that now that I stop taking it (obviously getting something else instead) I'll actually make decent headway with my weight loss.

In summary: never trust a doctor. Always Google any medicine that they prescribe you because they're idiots. I should know. My father's one.

With most prescription medicines, it gets rid of one problem but causes another.

But WTF. A doctor should have gone over common possible side effects with you.

Yeah. I mean I've had prescription medicine over the years but side effects are normally like "well this happened to 2% of people taking it". Not "this happens to about 60% of people taking it". Rofl ;____;

Well that's not the official statistic but from everything I've read (medical studies and journals and such) it's such a common side effect that it really should be emphasised. Because it seems like everyone gets this increase in weight gain and zombified state. I think my doctor's just an idiot basically :/ I have an appointment tomorrow with a different one though so fingers crossed she has a brain.

i don't know how it is by you but doctors here get incentives to prescribe certain brands of medicine by big companies like pfizer and what not.

Ugh that's so wrong. I'm not sure if it's the same here because our system is so different but it could be. I wouldn't be surprised.
